A Little Trip Away | Dorset

Lyme Regis Beach Huts

After a year full of assignments and exams equalling to toxic amounts of stress, there's no better way to unwind and detox than to drive across the country and head to the seaside.
Last year, my family and I did the same and headed to Newquay for a long weekend and because we all loved it so much, we decided to do the same this year but to head to another part of South England: South Devon. I think what's so inviting about the South of England, coming from the North, is that you feel as though you are in the middle of nowhere and it's quite refreshing to take a break away from the world and spend some quality time with loved ones. Even the five hour drive was well worth it.

The next sentence isn't for the faint hearted so be warned. To make the most of the weekend, we all woke up at 5AM on the Friday morning! Trust me, it wasn't my idea, but it actually proved out to work as we managed to miss the rush hour traffic and arrive in Axminister, South Devon, at around 11am which gave us another whole day to explore. We weren't allowed in our lodge until 4pm so we headed down to 'Lyme Regis', parked the car, and stayed there for the day. We had some lunch and sat on the beach and soaked in the beautiful sunshine. The sea was so clear and there was a wide range of eateries surrounding it. The sea air masked the intense heat of the sun and without being aware until we got home, we all got stupidly sunburnt ! Trust me to be wearing a t-shirt and end up with t-shirt tan-lines which made me look like a drumstick lollipop!

All eight of us stayed together in a lodge at Hawkchurch resort and spa in Axminister. This place was absolutely beautiful! There were multiple bathrooms and to our delight, each room had a flat screen Samsung TV. There was a bar and restaurant, gym, hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room on site, so we all made full use of the facilities. The lodges themselves were spacious and we didn't feel overlooked by anyone which was nice. Every lodge came with its own car parking space which was highly appreciated! The vibe of the complex was very peaceful and we all felt very safe there, which added to the relaxation of the trip.

The next day we headed to West Bay, which is where the ITV drama 'Broadchurch' was filmed. As a lover of the programme, I was thrilled to be able to see the infamous cliff edge and all the surrounding settings the were shown on the show. It is also the perfect spot to see the breath-taking Jurassic Coast. The town itself was lovely, with a harbour right in the centre of it surrounded by huts selling fish and chips and ice-creams.

Another highlight of the weekend was heading to a seaside town called 'Torquay', which was about an hour away from where we were staying. The beach we were on was so beautiful and I especially loved the sand art that was created there. We strolled down the harbour and popped into the various shops and visited the marina. My favourite part of this day was having a BBQ on the beach. The sun was so warm that if I closed my eyes, I could have been abroad. I felt like this all weekend, as I wore shorts and a t-shirt all weekend!

It was lovely trip away and I fully enjoyed every moment of it. It was so fun yet relaxing. With it being the second year on the run of visiting the South of England, perhaps this is the start of a new tradition for my family, so please let me know where else we should be exploring down there!
